A continuing series of posts to highlight my small antique map collection. All scans are taken directly from an original copy, not a reproduction.
Map of Russia from J. Carver’s “New Universal Traveller: Containing a Full and Distinct Account of all the Empires, Kingdoms, and States, in the Known World”, published by G. Robinson 1779. As far as I can tell Jonathan Carver’s contribution was minimal to this one, merely lending his name to the volume (according to the Christie’s website Captain Carver’s widow denied it to be the work of her husband). The map is actually drawn by Thomas Bowen (???? – 1790), who learnt his trade under his father Emanuel Bowen (1714 – 1767) who was engraver to George II and Louis XV of France.
